Five SA Spots Worth Exploring This Winter
Winter in South Africa gets a bad rap. But step outside the Highveld cold snap and you'll find a country that's arguably at its best between June and August — clear skies, dry trails, and far fewer people. Here's where to point the car.
1. The Garden Route The best option (once the floods have cleared up and we can safely move around again). Mild temperatures, ancient forests, and coastline that genuinely takes your breath away. Hike the Otter Trail, paddle the Keurbooms River, or just drive slowly and stop often. Tsitsikamma is particularly special in winter — moody, green, and quietly dramatic.
Pair it with: — Coreform Wide Leg Bottoms — Bend Sherpas — Featherfeel Hybrid Jacket
2. iSimangaliso Wetland Park, KZN Warm days, big skies, and wildlife that doesn't care what month it is. Snorkel off Cape Vidal, spot hippos at Charter's Creek, or catch humpback whales on their annual migration up the coast. It's subtropical winter — basically just a pleasant summer elsewhere.
Pair it with: — FlexPro Polos — Featherfeel Brushed Half Zip — Bend Caps
3. Mpumalanga Panorama Route & Dullstroom The Blyde River Canyon, God's Window, Bourke's Luck Potholes — all better with crisp air and clear visibility. And if you haven't spent a slow morning in Dullstroom yet, fix that. Trout fishing, misty hills, and a proper fire at the end of the day. Pack a mid-layer and hit the trails early before the day-trippers arrive.
Pair it with: — Coreform Glide Utility Tights — Nimbus Down Vest — Thermal Beanie
4. The Karoo Underrated and vast. Cold nights, but dry sunny days perfect for hiking and stargazing. Nieu-Bethesda and Graaff-Reinet have a quiet, unhurried energy that's hard to find anywhere else.
Pair it with: — Nimbus Softshell Jacket — Featherfeel Zip Top — Coreform Waffle Half Zip
5. Kruger National Park There's a reason people keep coming back. Winter is hands-down the best time to visit — dry bush, thinner vegetation, and game clustered around the remaining waterholes. The Big Five are out there, and the long golden afternoons make every sighting feel cinematic. Go slow, cover ground, and always have something warm for the early morning drive.
Where to stay inside the park: — Lower Sabie Rest Camp — one of the best-positioned camps in the south, excellent game viewing right from the fence — Olifants Rest Camp — perched on a cliff above the Olifants River, the views alone are worth it — Satara Rest Camp — central Kruger, lion country, and a great base for big cat sightings — Simbavati River Camp — smaller and more intimate, on the banks of the Timbavati River
Pair it with: — Stratus Utility Bottoms — Coreform Glide Tee — Bend Kit Crossbody bag
Pack layers you can move in. The best of South Africa this winter is outside.
